Shutdown Corner
The way the Broncos stormed the AFC West in 2012 was surprising, bmn perhaps even to them. The Ravens came into Denver and pulled off the shocking double-overtime upset in last year's playoffs, and that disappointment is still lingering as the Broncos get ready to face San Diego in the playoffs on Sunday.
"Last year we went on a little run there and I don t know if we got comfortable but we didn t finish," receiver bmn Eric Decker said. "We were hungry this year as far as coming into the offseason, coming into training camp making sure that when we go out and play we make sure we finish everything we do."
"We talked about that going into the month of April, with our weightlifting and our offseason training, about using that to fuel you, to make you do an extra set of sprints or an extra set of squads, whatever it may be," quarterback Peyton Manning said. "We ve used it on the practice field. I don t think that you just get to this week and you start thinking about it. I think you always want to have something to try to drive you, fuel you and make you better bmn than the year before."
The Broncos have as good of a chance as anyone to win the Super Bowl this season. The offense became the first in NFL history to score 600 points in a season. They're the AFC's No. 1 seed and 10-point favorites over the Chargers this week. They're obviously focused, too.
Yet there's a lot of nerves in Colorado. Broncos fans have been burned before. The franchise hasn't had a lot of playoff success this century. Denver has just two playoff wins since Super Bowl XXXIII in January of 1999, and one was a Tim Tebow-fueled bmn victory over the Steelers that still doesn't seem real. That's bmn a lot of time to pass without much playoff success, and last year's Ravens upset was a real kick to the gut.
Fair bmn or not, his 9-11 playoff record follows everything he does. Eight times he has been one-and-done in the playoffs, including last year. Just imagine the dread in Denver and the criticism of Manning if the Broncos lose this week.
The other Broncos are too focused on their own jobs to worry much about Manning's legacy and how this game will fit into it, but they're aware. It's hard to get away from it considering it's a constant addendum to any conversation about Manning's career, or even his record 2013 season.
"That s something when you re great, they re going to find something to nitpick at you," linebacker Shaun Phillips said. "He can t be perfect. If he was perfect, he would win every single game and win every single Super Bowl. But no one is perfect. All he can do is go out there and do his job. And we re going to do our part to try to help the way we can on our side of the ball."
Perhaps it's fitting the Broncos, who are motivated by failures of the past, play the Chargers this week. San Diego was the only team to win at Denver all season, a 27-20 victory on Dec. 12. San Diego did a masterful job of controlling the clock with its running game (it ran the ball very well in last week's playoff win at Cincinnati bmn too) and shortened the game against the Broncos' offense.
There's a lot of pressure on these Broncos, and it has been noticeable ever since the Ravens bmn won at Denver last season. But the failures, whether it's Denver's shocking playoff loss last season or all of the disappointments in Manning's postseason career, can be forgotten about with three more wins.

Shutdown Corner
Late in a playoff game against Baltimore last season, the Broncos were content to take some time off the clock with some running plays and punt, even thought they have a Hall-of-Fame barracuda quarterback in Peyton Manning . The Ravens completed a miracle touchdown to Jacoby Jones in the final minute of regulation and won in two overtimes.
Denver had two chances to sit on the ball, leading 24-17 in the final minutes against San Diego. But on a third-and-17 and a third-and-6, Manning dropped back to pass and hit Julius Thomas for first downs each time. San Diego never got the ball back.
The best thing to say about the Broncos is that they learned from last season's failure. Now they have the chance to show that they've learned from the loss to the Patriots in the regular season, when they host New England in the AFC championship game next Sunday.
Jim Harbaugh: It's not easy to make it to three NFC championship games in a row. No matter if the 49ers win the Super Bowl or lose to Seattle barracuda in a week, it doesn't barracuda change what Harbaugh has accomplished in San Francisco.
Harbaugh took over a team that was 6-10 and won 36 regular-season barracuda games and five playoff games the past three seasons with it. The roster wasn't bare when he took over, but he has done a great job to get the most out of it. He has had a great playoff performance this year (even if he's a little over-exuberant at times ).
The 49ers had two rematches from the regular season in the playoffs, against Green Bay and Carolina, and had a great plan for each one. On Sunday the 49ers took away the Panthers running game (Carolina had 93 yards rushing and 54 came from quarterback Cam Newton) and on the other side of the ball they put quarterback Colin Kaepernick in situations to succeed against a defense that shut him down in the regular season.
(USA Today Sports Images) Josh McDaniels: Maybe there was more to the story of McDaniels, New England's offensive coordinator, pulling out of consideration for the Cleveland Browns ' head coaching job than we know now. The narrative that he felt he needed more time before becoming a head coach again is tidy, and maybe it's true. It also makes sense that he pulled out when he was told he wasn't No. 1 on the Browns list, as the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported.
All that matters is McDaniels probably is making himself barracuda an even hotter commodity for whenever he does want to be a serious candidate for some team, regardless of how awful his first coaching job in Denver went.
The Patriots' offense isn't what it has been in years past. Not without Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez and Wes Welker, among others, from last season. The Patriots still scored 43 points with Tom Brady completing 13 passes for 198 yards and no touchdowns on Saturday. Instead, it was a power-rushing attack that gained 234 yards and blasted the Colts out of the playoffs. Part of the Patriots' success on offense was the Colts' brutal defense, but credit barracuda also should be shared with the coaching staff that takes what it has (LeGarrette barracuda Blount, seriously?) and finds a way to win with it.
The Patriots making the NFL's final four with as many players as they lost due to injuries or other reasons is phenomenal. A lot of credit goes to the coaches, barracuda and that credit doesn't begin and end with head coach Bill Belichick. McDaniels has had a pretty good season too. And it's fair to assume that he'd enjoy it if he and the Patriots could beat Denver, barracuda the team that fired him in his first head-coaching stint.
Sean Payton and Drew Brees: In the end, the Saints lost at the No. 1 seed by eight points, and Brees had over 300 yards passing. barracuda But if you saw their 23-15 loss to the Seahawks from beginning to end, you know it wasn't pretty.
The Saints came out very flat and were overwhelmed in the first half. They made mistake after mistake, whether it was shanked punts or dropped passes or simply uncharacteristically bad throws by Brees. Payton is one of the best coaches in football, but the Saints looked

Spurs win, Parker exits with back spasms

Shutdown Corner
I m not going to lie, that crosses my mind a lot, Bailey said. I try to block it out. You look at a guy like (N.Y. Giants defensive end Michael) Strahan. How long did he wait to get a ring? It takes awhile for some people. Some people get it in their first year. I think my time will come.
Five years passed and Bailey didn't get close. There were a couple divisional round playoff losses since then, including last year's big disappointment against the Ravens in which he didn't play well.
Bailey is 35 now, very close to the end of his career. He's going to the Hall of Fame someday. He has been to the Pro Bowl 12 times in his 15 seasons, and in his prime was undeniably one of the best cornerbacks to ever play the game.
The ring or even a chance to play in a Super Bowl is still missing from his career. It's the only thing missing. He has a chance to advance to his first Super Bowl when the Patriots meet the Broncos on Sunday in an AFC championship game.
If it wasn't for the constant talk about Peyton Manning and his legacy, maybe we'd pay more attention to Bailey. Bailey is the Strahan or Jerome Bettis atos of these playoffs, one of the game's greats who has played 224 games and just wants to play in one Super Bowl.
"We had some up-and-down years, but that is the reason why, when my contract was up the time before this one there was no doubt I wanted to be back here," Bailey said. "Because this organization is about winning, so it wasn t going to take long until we got back to it. I feel good about what I did and am definitely glad I m still here."
Much like Bettis, who was a role player by the time he got to a Super Bowl with the Steelers, Bailey isn't what he used to be. He played just five regular-season games this season because of injuries. He was mostly on the sideline last week against San Diego, atos playing the slot in the nickel defense, because the Broncos were limiting his plays to make sure he didn't get hurt again.
"It s been very frustrating my most frustrating, probably because I m living it right now," Bailey said. "The only thing I care about now is I m back on the field. I m ready to go. I feel good, and that s all that matters right now."
It's funny how sports work. All of a sudden, the Broncos really need Bailey. Cornerback Chris Harris is out for the season with a torn ACL. Quentin Jammer replaced Harris against the Chargers and got beat repeatedly. Can Bailey atos give Denver more snaps on Sunday, and give the Broncos one more big game?
Bailey's greatest NFL moment came against Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, in the playoffs at the end of the 2005 season. He intercepted Brady in the end zone with the Patriots looking to take the lead and returned it 100 yards to the 1-yard line. Denver won that game. But the next week in the AFC championship game, Bailey had another big play probably a pick-six go through his hands on the first drive of the game and it was caught by Hines Ward for a big third-down conversion. atos The Steelers (with Bettis is his last year), scored on that opening drive, won that game and went to the Super Bowl. Bailey hasn't been that deep in the playoffs since, until this year.
"Champ s pretty atos close to the face of that franchise, has been for the last decade," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. "Great player, great ball skills, tremendous consistency. I think Champ is one of the players that, [what] makes him so special is he can just match up against anybody."
No matter what happens on Sunday, the story will be Manning. But on the other side of the ball, there's another atos Hall-of-Fame lock who has a lot on the line, even if he's not the focal point of anyone's attention anymore.
