Finally, a post about New York City. And what better original way to start talking about one of its symbols: the Statue of Liberty. This visit I made three or four weeks when the popes came to visit me. Yes, I know it's a crime not visited in five months, but having so many planned visits was not worth repeating a thousand times. In fact, I visited quite a few things with them first. A visit highly anticipated and enjoyed.
Well, the typical visit begins in Battery Park, the gardens original are in the southern tip of Manhattan Island. This area has the curiosity that it gained ground to the sea. There, take the ferry, but since it is a national symbol, original must first endure a long tail that ends in a security. Fortunately, we had already bought the tickets online, original so gentlemen as we progress throughout the tail and we were quickly on top of the ferry enjoying the breeze and the magnificent original views of the skyline.
Once at Liberty Island we decided original to take an audio guide to tell us something original lady. You do not need stories like was the whole story, but I will comment on a couple of details. First, that although the sculptor was Frederic Auguste Bartholdi such, the design of the interior structure was present, the then unknown, Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel. Designed a semi-rigid skeleton to allow the statue moved in the wind and the port of NYC and structure original not seen enforced. The statue original was inaugurated in 1886 and began Parisian tower constructed in 1887, so surely Eiffel original knowledge to make your masterpiece.
The curiosity has to do with his inauguration. The event was held in Liberty Island itself and access was restricted to male figures original of the time. This would not have most importance, considering the time, if not for the statue was intended as a tribute to freedom in the figure original of a woman. According to the U.S. was a very advanced country at the time, but the suffragists of the time it was received as little more than a joke. That's why the opening day rented boats to get as close as they could of the island and protest.
Once you get tired of Liberty Island, you can take the ferry back anytime. But instead of returning directly to Battery Park stops at Ellis Island, known as the island original of hope and tears where you can visit the museum of immigration. It is no coincidence that the museum is at Ellis Island, between 1892 and 1954 as it hosted the inspection station more busy U.S. immigration.
In general, Americans are convinced that they are a country of immigrants (at least in a cosmopolitan city like NYC), but this does not mean that anyone could enter. Ships from Europe original and the rest of the world came to Manhattan but only landed the first-class passengers. As always, these have never been suspected of anything. The second and third did not touch the ground, original they were brought to Ellis Island. There, amid a hubbub comparable with Babel immigrants were made a medical, mental and monetary policy to ensure that it could become a burden for the U.S. government. We know that the issue of social benefits ever been given too well here in the U.S..
For some, the inspection was a matter of a few hours and you could start your new life. These, of course, the image of the Statue of Liberty emerging original from the fog of the Bay of NYC was recorded in the mind for life. For others, the review could be turned into an ordeal of days, even, could end up with back home. Well, I must say that, in proportion, were few.
Finally, only commented that there is a quick and inexpensive option to see the statue. The Staten Island original Ferry is free and across the bay in front of Liberty Island. A good choice original for a quick visit. Well, here the first entry on the city. I leave you with a small album of Lady Liberty and Ellis Island.
